BLWM Welcomes Aileen E. Cohen to our Las Vegas Office

A Little About Myself
    by Aileen Cohen

My life has never been typical and neither is my profession as a lawyer. I have devoted my life and legal career to fulfilling my simply stated mission: Helping People.

Early in my career as a lawyer, I learned to successfully navigate the Nevada Court system and I convinced a judge to reduce a life sentence for an individual who was unjustly sentenced, to only ten years.

Gladly, I can share my personal key to helping people in one word; adaptability.

My clients appreciate and benefit from my commitment to adaptability and have told me countless times that is what separates me from most other attorneys.

Another aspect of being a helpful, helping lawyer is education.  I have presented educational programs to various professional groups.  One popular topic is “Trends and Issues Which Often Result in Errors and Omissions Claims.”  This has been presented to members of the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors, as well as other professionals.

Another of my presentations has been presented to residents of many care homes alerting them to elderly mistreatment and the methods used by exploiters.

I have long believed that offering client information beyond defense litigation arms the client for the defense of future claims and may help to reduce risk management issues from arising into a claim.

My passions include diverse cultures, whether they involve cuisine, music or art. Even after succeeding at my goal to embrace a healthier lifestyle and lose 130 pounds, I still enjoy a variety of cultural foods which I have come to appreciate.  I also enjoy a passion which came from my family being raised in a home that included dogs, tortoises and a giant macaw.

Fortunately, I have never had to limit my advocacy to the courtroom. I regularly champion the adoption and protection of retired racing Greyhounds and efforts to fight breast cancer. In both cases, I get to represent and help those with little or no voice and a real need for protection.

Today, her practice areas include general civil and complex litigation, primarily in the areas of insurance defense and insurance coverage issues.  Ms. Cohen also practices litigation surrounding contractual and administrative issues.  “Litigation is not limited strictly to a strictly defined concept of liability.  The issues involved in any area of law require just as much focus on discovery and motion practice than a traditional tort or contract action.”

Ms. Cohen is a highly skilled professional in all phases of civil and criminal trials and court appearances, including oral argument in motion and evidentiary hearings.  Ms. Cohen’s experience is not limited to the courtroom as she is well versed at representing her clients’ interests in alternative forms of dispute resolution, such as arbitration, mediation, settlement conferences and administrative hearings.

In addition to her broad civil litigation capabilities, Ms. Cohen has substantial experience in the area of criminal defense in both the state and federal court system.  In a notable decision, Ms. Cohen’s post-conviction research, preparation of legal briefs and oral argument before the Nevada Supreme Court in Burrell v. State of Nevada resulted in the reversal of a life sentence and re-sentencing for her client.

Ms. Cohen successfully obtained summary judgment defending an attorney in a malpractice claim.  In addition, she also obtained a partial summary judgment that significantly reduced her client’s substantial exposure.

Ms. Cohen is licensed to practice in Nevada and Oregon and has been admitted to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Nevada (1995) and to the Ninth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals (1996).  Ms. Cohen is a member of the Southern Nevada Association of Women Attorneys, Las Vegas Defense Lawyers and the Nevada State Bar Animal Law Section.

In March 2016, Ms. Cohen joined attorney Michael C. Mills in the Las Vegas office of Bauman, Lowe, Witt and Maxwell.   In addition to her trial and litigation responsibilities, she will be contributing regularly to the Nevada Law Blogs:
